Nicknamed ''Mighty Man'' by his connections, Gallant Man was the horse famously denied a win in the Kentucky Derby when his jockey, a young Bill Shoemaker, stood up in the irons momentarily after mistaking the sixteenth pole for the wire. Oddly, owner Ralph Lowe dreamed several days before the race that Gallant Man lost because his jockey pulled him up prematurely. Voted 36th of the top 100 racehorses of the century by The Blood-Horse, he is widely considered one of the best horses never to win a championship.
Sire of 498 foals, 414 runners, 51 SW.
Died 1988.
